Chatbots · LLMs · Local AI

Choose the AI
that fits the job.

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and local AI tools are not interchangeable. Learn what each type does, what people use it for, and which option best fits your goal.

Plain English first

Three words people keep mixing together.

You do not need a computer-science degree. You just need to know which part is the engine, which part you talk to, and which part has an actual job.

01

LLM

The language engine. A large language model learns patterns from enormous collections of text, then constructs a response one piece at a time. It can sound certain and still be wrong, so important facts deserve checking.

02

Chatbot

The interface and behavior wrapped around an LLM. It gives you the chat window, file uploads, voice, web search, saved conversations, safety rules, and whatever personality the company chose.

03

Agent

An AI system built for a specific job. It combines a model with instructions and may also use files, memory, tools, approvals, or a schedule to complete a multi-step workflow.

Brainstorm and planWrite and reviseSummarize filesResearch with sourcesBuild storiesLearn subjectsGet coding helpAutomate repeatable work

Beyond text

AI can help create voices, images, and video too.

Chatbots can help plan the work and may connect to creative generators, but the language model is not doing every job by itself. Voice, image, and video generation usually rely on separate models built for those formats.

01

Voice

AI voice tools can narrate writing, create character voices, translate speech, clean recordings, or turn text into audio. Quality, usage rights, cloning rules, and pricing vary by service.

02

Images

Image models can create new artwork and realistic scenes, edit pictures, remove objects, change backgrounds, or produce variations from a reference. Results still need human review.

03

Video

Video models can animate an image, generate short scenes, create effects, or help assemble a larger project. They have limits: motion, faces, continuity, clip length, and exact control can still go sideways.

04

Local hardware versus the web

Running creative models offline can require a powerful graphics card, plenty of VRAM, storage, memory, electricity, and patience. An older or underpowered computer may run them poorly—or not at all. Web-based tools use the provider’s hardware, so they can work from a modest computer through a browser, although subscriptions, credits, queues, and service limits may apply.

The law still applies.

AI does not make illegal content legal. Do not use it to create unlawful sexual content, abuse imagery, fraud, impersonation, harassment, nonconsensual intimate material, or anything else prohibited by law. Copyright, privacy, consent, publicity rights, and platform rules still matter too.

Start with your objective

Do not choose a tool before you know the job.

The best AI depends on what you want to accomplish, how private the material is, how much setup you will tolerate, and whether you need current information.

01

Write, plan, or brainstorm

Start with a general cloud chatbot such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Try the same real task in two services and keep the one whose answers and workflow suit you.

02

Research current information

Use a tool with live web search and visible sources. Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and others offer search features—but citations still need to be opened and checked.

03

Work with long documents

Choose a chatbot that accepts your file type and can keep enough of the document in context. Ask it to quote the relevant section so you can verify the answer.

04

Keep sensitive work private

Consider a local model or an approved business service with suitable data controls. “Private” depends on where the model, files, search, and connected tools actually run.

05

Create images, audio, or video

Use a service designed for that medium. A chatbot may help write the prompt or plan the project, but the creative generator is usually a separate model and tool.

06

Repeat a specialized job

Build an agent only after the task is clear. Give it focused instructions, the right sources, limited tools, and a way for a person to review important actions.

The cloud lineup

Eight major chatbots. Eight different tradeoffs.

Cloud AI is easy to start and usually gives you the strongest new models first. The price of that convenience can be subscriptions, changing limits, internet dependence, and less control over how the service changes.

The honest comparison

Cloud is convenient. Local gives you control.

Local AI is not automatically better. It swaps easy access and top-tier cloud power for privacy, flexibility, predictable use, and ownership of the setup.

Trying local AI

There is more than one way to begin.

Local AI runs models on your computer rather than a provider’s server. The right setup depends on the task, available hardware, and preferred level of control.

01Fastest start

Easiest all-in-one local chat

LM Studio lets you find compatible language models, download one, and chat in a desktop app. It is a straightforward first look at local AI without assembling several programs.

02More control

Flexible private chat workspace

Ollama can run the language model while Open WebUI provides the chat interface. This route makes sense when you want more control, multiple users, or integrations.

03Visual creation

Local image or video workflows

ComfyUI is built for visual generation, not ordinary chat. It offers detailed control through reusable workflows, but it has a steeper learning curve and heavier hardware demands.

Before downloading a model:

Check the app’s system requirements, available storage, and the model’s size. Local models vary widely in speed and quality, and a model that technically opens may still run too slowly to be useful.

Better prompting

Give it a clear job and enough context.

Include the goal, relevant background, important limits, and the desired format.

GoalContextConstraintsOutput

State the goal

“Help me compare three newsletter platforms for a small paid publication” is more useful than “Tell me about newsletters.”

Add the relevant context

Include the audience, budget, existing tools, deadline, or source material that changes the answer.

Set real constraints

Say what must be included, avoided, verified, kept private, or limited by time, money, length, or skill level.

Request a useful format

Ask for a checklist, table, draft, plan, questions, or first three actions. Make the answer easy to use after the chat ends.

A strong starter prompt:

“I want to [goal]. Here is the relevant background: [context]. Keep these limits in mind: [constraints]. Give me the answer as [format]. If information is missing, ask me before assuming.”

AI agents

A chatbot answers. An agent completes a workflow.

An agent is a system, not a special kind of model. It uses an LLM to decide what to do next, works through multiple steps, and may read information, call tools, save results, or request approval before taking an action.

What makes it an agent

  1. GoalThe specific result it is responsible for producing.
  2. ModelThe LLM that interprets the request, reasons through the task, and chooses the next step.
  3. InstructionsThe rules, limits, tone, process, and conditions for stopping or asking for help.
  4. Knowledge and memoryApproved files, databases, previous results, or facts the agent is allowed to use.
  5. ToolsSearch, calendars, code, email, business software, or other services the agent can operate.
  6. Trigger and reviewA person, schedule, or event starts the work; important actions can require human approval.

Examples

Research assistantSearches approved sources, organizes findings, and produces a cited briefing.
Writing assistantUses a style guide or story reference to help plan, draft, revise, and check consistency.
Customer guideAnswers common questions from approved business information and hands unusual cases to a person.
Document assistantSearches a selected collection of files and answers questions using those materials.
Scheduling assistantChecks availability and prepares calendar actions within rules you define.
Project assistantTracks decisions, summarizes progress, and suggests the next useful action.

GoalInstructionsKnowledgeToolsReview

Begin with one repeatable task.

Add memory, web access, email, payments, or permission to change records only when the workflow requires them.

Privacy, accuracy, and limits

Useful does not mean infallible.

AI can save time and still invent facts, miss context, reflect bias, expose information through careless sharing, or produce work you cannot legally or ethically use as-is.

01

Check important claims

Verify medical, legal, financial, safety, and current-event information with qualified or primary sources. Confidence is a writing style, not proof.

02

Protect private information

Do not paste confidential, identifying, client, financial, or unpublished material into a service until you understand its settings and data policy.

03

Review before you publish

Check names, dates, sources, tone, originality, permissions, and whether the result actually says what you meant.

Choose what fits

Use cloud, local, or both.

Choose each tool according to the work, privacy needs, budget, and available hardware.
